It was raining. You could feel it against your face and your clothes were already soaked as you stood perfectly still, staring down at the tombstone of the only person you'd really loved. Your mother had called you to give you the news of what had happened and you had come as fast as you could.
Alas, you missed the funeral anyway.
Taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly, you closed your eyes. You couldn't believe that right there in the ground before you was your boyfriend. Your life would cease to ever be joyful again.
"I promised we would live happily."
Your breath felt as if it was suddenly squeezed out of you and you hugged yourself to try and keep the sobs from coming. How could it be that you were already hallucinating his voice? It had been so clear, as if he was standing right behind you.
"I intend to keep that promise."
The first sob escaped your lips and your legs gave way, causing you to fall to the ground. Your shoulders shook as tears slid down your cheeks and mixed with the rain that was already there, making it impossible to distinguish which was which. You could feel your heart literally tearing in two and you half expected to see blood pouring from your chest if you opened your eyes.
"Leave me alone! It hurts enough already!" you screamed at nothing, burying your face in your hands.
A hand suddenly on your shoulder, you whipped your head up to see who was there. You thought your mother might have come to see if you were okay, or maybe one of your other close friends.
But it was neither of those two options.
"I'm so sorry I never told you my plan."
You stumbled to your feet, not taking your eyes off the person who was standing there and looking at you with such sorrow in their eyes.
"But you're..." you tried to say.
"I couldn't tell you, it was better if you didn't know. I needed people to see that you honestly knew nothing about it."
"What are you saying?" you gasped, wiping your eyes with the back of your hand but not managing to stop the tears.
"I faked my death so that they wouldn't come after me. We'll never be bothered by them ever again."
"You... you're really here?" you asked, choking on the words slightly. After the small nod and smile you witnessed, you stepped forward and pulled him into your arms, sobbing once again.
"It was so painful having to watch you cry." he whispered. "I'll never do anything like that to you ever again."
"Shut up and kiss me." you spat out, taking his face in your hands and kissing his lips. It was real. He was there. He tasted exactly the same as you remembered.
Pulling away, he stared down into your eyes. "We need to go away some place." You nodded slowly, running your fingers through his hair.
"I don't care where we go. Just make sure we'll be safe and I'll never be faced with losing you again." you said to him.
"I wouldn't be satisfied with anything less." he replied with a smile.
